📡 Quickstart Guide — Baofeng 888S & C5

How to Use
a Walkie Talkie.

Never used one before? No problem. This guide covers everything you need to communicate clearly from day one.

// Section 01
KNOW YOUR DEVICE

Familiarise yourself with the key parts before you power on.

GETTING STARTED

Follow these steps every time you power up your radio.

1
Power On

Find the Volume/Power knob at the top left of the device (Part ②). Rotate it clockwise until you hear a click — that's it powering on. The LED indicator (Part ④) will light up green.

💡
To power off: Rotate the same knob anti-clockwise until you hear the click again. Always power off when not in use to save battery.
2
Adjust the Volume

After powering on, continue rotating the Volume/Power knob (Part ②) clockwise to increase volume, or anti-clockwise to decrease it. You'll hear a brief tone when it's on — use that to set the level.

⚠️
Too loud? In quiet environments like indoor events, a lower volume is better. Hearing the other person loudly on your radio disturbs those nearby.
3
Check the Battery

If the LED (Part ④) blinks red or the radio beeps repeatedly, the battery is low. Place it in the charging dock (included) and wait until the indicator shows a full charge. A full charge typically takes 3–5 hours and lasts a full day of regular use.

Good habit: Charge all devices the night before your event so they're at 100% when you need them.

// Section 03
PUSH TO TALK

This is the most important thing to understand. Unlike a phone call, a walkie talkie is half-duplex — only one person can transmit at a time.

🔘
Press & hold PTT
🎙️
Wait 1 sec, then speak
Release to end
👂
Now you can listen
4
How to Speak

Hold the radio 5–8 cm from your mouth, roughly the distance of two fingers. Press the PTT button (Part ⑥) on the left side, wait one second, then speak in a clear, normal voice. Don't shout — the microphone is sensitive.

⚠️
Wait before you speak: Press PTT → pause 1 second → then talk. If you skip the pause, your first few words will be cut off.
🚫
Don't hold PTT while listening: When you hold the button down, nobody else can transmit on the channel. Always release after speaking.

// Section 04
CHANNELS

Think of channels like radio stations. Every device in your team must be on the same channel to communicate.

CH3
You
CH3
Teammate A
CH3
Teammate B
CH7
Can't hear you
5
Set Your Channel

Use the Channel Selector knob (Part ③) at the top right. Rotate it until you reach your agreed channel number. We recommend starting everyone on Channel 1 unless you need multiple teams with separate comms.

💡
Multiple teams? Assign each team a different channel (e.g. Stage crew on CH1, Security on CH2, Management on CH3) so they don't talk over each other.
Before the event: Test all radios on the same channel and confirm everyone can hear a test message. Do this at least 30 minutes before you start.

// Section 05
RADIO LINGO

These phrases keep communication fast, clear, and professional. They're not mandatory, but they prevent confusion.

"Over"
I'm done talking, your turn to respond. Always say this at the end of a message when you expect a reply.
"Copy"
I heard and understood your message. Short and clean alternative to "okay" or "yes".
"Roger"
Message received and understood. Same as Copy — pick one and stick with it.
"Say Again"
Please repeat your last message. Use this instead of "what?" — it's clearer on radio.
"Stand By"
Wait — I'll respond shortly. Useful when you're busy and can't reply immediately.
"Out"
Conversation is over, no reply needed. Used to formally end a call.
"Negative"
No. Clearer than "no" on a noisy channel where single syllables can be missed.
"Affirmative"
Yes. Clearer than "yes" because it has more syllables, harder to mishear.
💡
Example call: "Security, this is Stage — Guest access gate is open, please check. Over." → Reply: "Stage, this is Security — Copy that, on my way. Over." → "Security, copy. Out."

// Section 06
CHARGING

Charging docks are included with your rental. Here's how to use them correctly.

6
Using the Charging Dock

Place the walkie talkie into the dock with the battery pack facing the contacts. Plug the dock into a standard power outlet. The LED on the dock or radio will turn red while charging and green when fully charged.

⚠️
Power off before charging: Always turn the radio off before placing it in the dock. Charging while the radio is on can reduce battery life over time.
💡
Charge time: A fully drained battery takes approximately 3–5 hours to reach full charge. Don't leave it charging for more than 8 hours.
Event tip: If your event runs multiple days, rotate charging overnight so you always have a fresh set ready each morning.

// Section 07
DOS & DON'TS

Quick reference for keeping communications clean and the equipment safe.

✓ DO
  • Keep all devices on the same channel before your event starts
  • Wait 1 second after pressing PTT before speaking
  • Speak clearly and at a normal pace, 5–8 cm from the speaker
  • Say "Over" when expecting a reply
  • Power off and charge radios when not in active use
  • Test all radios before the event begins
  • Keep the radio dry and away from liquids
  • Handle the antenna with care — don't bend or force it
✗ DON'T
  • 🚫 Hold PTT while someone else is transmitting — it blocks the channel
  • 🚫 Shout into the radio — the microphone distorts at high volume
  • 🚫 Transmit sensitive information on shared channels
  • 🚫 Leave the radio powered on in the charging dock
  • 🚫 Drop the device — internal components are delicate
  • 🚫 Cover the speaker grille while talking — it muffles reception
  • 🚫 Submerge or expose to heavy rain — not waterproof
  • 🚫 Modify settings you're unsure about — stick to channel & volume

TROUBLESHOOTING

Most issues are simple to fix. Check here before calling us.

Radio won't turn on
Check the battery is properly seated in the pack. If it still won't start, place it in the charging dock for 30 minutes — the battery may be fully drained. Try powering on again after.
🔇 Can't hear the other person
First, confirm you're both on the same channel number — this is the most common issue. Then check your volume level (rotate the top-left knob clockwise). If still silent, ask the other person to transmit a test message while you hold the Monitor button (Part ⑦).
📢 Constant static / noise
A hissing background noise is normal squelch. It should stop when no one is transmitting. If it's constant, try switching to a different channel — another user may be on your channel. If it persists, contact us.
✂️ My voice is being cut off
You're likely speaking too quickly after pressing PTT. Press the button, wait one full second, then begin speaking. This gives the transmission a moment to lock on before your voice is sent.
📶 Poor range / breaking up
Walls, metal structures, and large crowds reduce range. Move to a more open area if possible. Make sure the antenna is upright and undamaged. These radios perform best in line-of-sight conditions.
🔴 LED stays red / won't charge
Ensure the dock is powered (check the plug and outlet). Make sure the radio is properly seated in the dock with contacts aligned. If the issue persists after re-seating, contact us — the dock or battery may need replacing.
